My dear Walewski,
My colleagues in London approve entirely of sending confidential instructions to the different commanders not to recommence hostilities until they receive further instructions. Palmerston informs me that orders to that effect shall be sent immediately to General Codlington (?) and I have written to Stratford to desire the Porte to send corresponding orders to Asia Minor. Will you take the necessary measures for informing Marshal Pelissier.
There are various matters of detail, particularly those respecting the Danube, which Buol thinks it might be better to discuss in conversation rather in conference as that would avoid all difficulty about the Prussians. I think this course would enable us private meeting of which no protocol would exist.
I should like to say a few words to youbefore you speak to Buol upon that Italian question.
We must not on any account yield to the Russians about reveving the ancient treaties between Russia and the Porte even for a day. The best course will be to have an article in the general treaty stipulating that until the treaties abrogated by the war shall be renewed as fresh the (?) concluded each Power shall treat the subjects of the ........ upon the footing of the most favored nation.
Ever yours
Clarendon
